FAQ

Common questions

What is the reference price for XAU/USD used on this site?

The site uses a reference price of about 4275.0 to anchor examples. It is a reference point for illustration, not a live quote, and the price you see at your broker will differ because it reflects that broker's own feed, spread and the moment you look.

What actually moves the gold price during a Kenyan trading day?

Gold moves on the US dollar, real interest rate expectations, central bank buying and demand for safe assets during geopolitical stress. The size of any move depends on the data released and how surprised the market is, so a quiet Kenyan afternoon can turn volatile when US figures land.

Why is gold quoted in US dollars if I trade from Kenya?

XAU/USD is quoted in dollars because the global gold market settles in dollars. Your profit or loss is therefore in dollars and only becomes shillings when you convert, so the USD/KSh rate is a second source of risk on top of the gold price itself.

Is one lot of gold the same as buying 100 ounces of physical gold?

In contract terms, one standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 oz of notional exposure, but you are not taking delivery of metal. It is a leveraged contract, so you post margin rather than the full value, and your gain or loss tracks the price move on that 100 oz.

How risky is gold compared with other instruments?

Gold is high-risk when traded with leverage: it can gap on news and move sharply in minutes, and losses can exceed your deposit. The risk you actually carry depends on your lot size, stop distance and leverage, which is why sizing comes before any view on direction.
